Unit 3/4 : Vinegar Tom
vinegar Tom was written in 1976 by a british playwright by the name of Caryl Churchill. It circulates around the themes of gender and power relationships. The play was originally set in the 17th century. It was mainly used as an inspiration after a woman by the name of Elizabeth Clarke was executed for witchcraft in 1645.So the play was written as it wanted to explore the women Rights Acts in 1970. It was premiered for the first time in Humberside Theatre,Hull on the 12th of october 1976.
When we first got given the scripts for the play, we analysed the wordings and the way it was written,we thought of ideas and techniques used to be able to explore and inspire people in the modern era and show people the way things were. We were given homework to research when the play was set and the backstory of the upcoming of it.
We then all came back with our ideas and absorbed a bubble where we combined every good point together.
We would also be split into pairs to practise the lines with our partners to make sure we were capable at memorising our own scripts.
in Production with Rebecca we researched different topics of the 17th century, myself choosing costumes. We researched and went on websites to write an essay about the roles of a costume designer and the other roles they have to work with to be able to succeed with their parts.
We were given an equal amount of time, which is why we had learnt it pretty well.
When the day of the performance took part , nerves built up , but everyone had the confidence which kept everyone going and being able to thrive through the performace,i think we were all composed and their was no big gaps or pauses so i would say we done pretty good, at the end we would give the audience a bow ,getting a usual applaudence before leaving.
I would say it is nerve racking being watched on stage performing a play after a certain amount of time but i feel like everyone in the class is there to thrive not only for themselves but to help others around them,I wouldnt really communicate out of college but during lessons ,we were smashing it.
