Unit 7 : individual monologue

 


   


The class was given an assignment to find a contemporary monologue from a play. i visited the library and found monologue books which helped me pick out the most  amusing monologue for myself  so that I could perform it. I decided to choose "Boys" by Ella Hickson. The character is around the same age as i am and he is also performing in a live concert , which in my version would be performing theatre in front of hundreds of people


I was intrigued about this particular monologue because i knew the name Ella Hickson from a play that she released in 2013 called Wendy and Peter Pan. I also wanted to learn the monologue because the idea of someone being from the same city as you just inspires you to read and engage with the piece. A couple days later i managed to learn the monologue word for word and now it was just about directing my movement for when I'm on stage. i broke a couple lines down to find the different types of emotion and how the character would express themselves. 


My Character :


A boy named Cam who is currently a student , is living in his shared  accommodation in Edinburgh with his roommates, although the contract of the flat is nearing closer to its end. The night before , him and his friends party and don’t take into consideration about what’s happening tomorrow. A huge opportunity for Cam is just around the corner but his mindset is not giving into it and he would rather pull out rather than embarrass himself. He’s made it clear to his friend Benny , that playing a violin was not part of his plans and that he feels pressured in doing so. Benny persuades him to carry on with his plans and to do the best he can no matter what. As he is awaiting to perform live at a concert , the nerves are really getting to him and it could either be a make or break career stance. He wants the night to go well and for his fears to change into an unregrettable  experience and to know that the terrified Cam a couple of hours ago has triumphed by beating the fear of putting on a show that would make people respect and cherish him.

Later that day Cam leaves to head to the concert whilst his friends carry on partying.

He returns a couple of hours later and is confronted by his roommates , they want to know everything that occured. As he starts to illustrate his night , the question is how did it go?


Evaluation :

I performed the monologue infront of Rob ,  and he gave me feedback , which was that i had a good toned voice and i was in the moment but i was sighing whenever there was an  Ellipsis. I was told to just pause because the sighing was making me look like i was nervous and that i had forgotten my lines and i was trying to buy myself time. Im very happy with my feedback because i know that my articulation was good and because that the articulation would more or less be mentioned. I was recorded and i have sent the video to Rob alexander.

Unit 5/6

Like there's no tomorrowike there's no tomorrow was created by Belgrade's young company including Justine Themen , Claire Procter and Liz Mytton.The Belgrade Youth Theatre presented "Like There's No Tomorrow" - one of the first National Theatre Connections plays to be created by young people, originally devised by Belgrade's Young Company in march 2020. The play gives voice to young people's concerns about climate change at a time when the future has never looked more uncertain. A mayor candidate is trying to gain attention from the people in the area to change the way things run and also outlines the benefits of why he should be chosen. However Aisha protests and claims that these changes will eventually affect the whole world and mainly the poor. Production lessons with Rebecca

In Rebecca's production lessons we would arrive at 1pm and be informed of the work set to complete for that lesson. We would work on computers most times. There would be normal difficulties when using a computer , like for example, passwords not working or computers just running slow. We would have to deal with it but at the end of the day we would complete our goal so everything is still merry. At times we are told to write paragraphs about a topic for example, Clothing, what do clothing designers need , any qualifications, who they work with , how they have to think or act and how they do their jobs. We would learn about different lights that are used in theatres, for instance Profiles, LED stage lights , Side lights etc. We would also have a PSHE lesson afterwards for another hour on a Monday, we've covered County lines and other topics already. I think it's good because its an everyday knowledge which of course everyone would want to have.
